British Values

We value the importance of and recognise we have a duty to prepare our children for life in modern Britain effectively and develop their understanding of the fundamental British Values:

• Democracy
• The Rule of Law
• Individual Liberty
• Mutual Respect
• Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs

As a Catholic School, the teachings of the church actively promote values, virtues and ethics that shape our pupils' character and moral compass. Through our school mission and vision, agreed rules and ethos of the school we promote respect and tolerance to all, with inclusivity and equality at the forefront.

In so doing we reinforce British values regularly and in the following ways:

• Children are given a 'voice' in yearly elections for School Council, Faith Leaders and House Captains. Children are guided through the process of preparing a persuasive speech to share with others their plans and vision for the time in leadership. Likewise voters are briefed on how to make an informed decision that is true to their own beliefs.  

• As well as providing a deep knowledge of the Catholic Faith in RE lesson, each half term, all year groups study a different world faith in order to identify similarities and celebrate differences. 

• Children receive visits from external agencies such as the police, NSPCC, The road safety team, Bikability to enhance children's understanding of law. 

• A range of topics across the curriculum have strong links to British history and culture.  

• Our Virtues to Live By are taught and celebrated as part of a  3 weekly cycle. Adults educate the children on what the virtue looks like in practice and the children are keen to witness and identify peers who practice the particular Virtue. The whole school reward system reinforces these behaviours and Celebration Worship allows the schools to come together and celebrate successes. 

• Annual theme weeks are held across school i.e. anti-bullying, Remembrance day and Royal occasions.

• Our PSHE curriculum is based around SCARF material (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience and Friendship). 

• Picture news resource is used in classrooms to enable safe and open discussion about current affairs in Britain and around the world. 

• Pupils are keen to support charities, whether local, national or global i.e. Bradford Food Bank, CAFOD, Catholic Care, Save the Children, and Responses to emergency appeals.
